Public speaking workshop for translators and interpreters

Join us at the Quaker Meeting House on Victoria Street in Edinburgh on Saturday 14 March 2020 for our spring workshop. The morning workshop will be followed by a networking lunch as usual.

We have gone for a new topic this time, one which we are sure is of relevance to all of us, whether for work or perhaps in our private lives: public speaking. We obviously hope this will be of interest to our interpreters! But for those of us who don’t talk professionally, how often do we have to stand up in front of a number of people to say something and feel at a bit of a loss? Or try and find our words don’t really hit the mark? Or feel so apprehensive that we are scarcely able to get anything comprehensible out?

PRESENCE & POSITIVITY – adding personality to presentations and public speaking

In this practical and interactive sessions, communications and media specialist Mairi Damer of WORD UP Communications (https://www.wordupscot.co.uk/) will share some top tips to help polish our public speaking and presentation skills. Mairi will emphasise the need for P&P (preparation and performance), and encourage us to be brave. During the session she will demonstrate that public speaking of any kind needs an injection of dynamism, personality and positivity if we want to make ourselves, or our work, memorable.

She will adapt her one day Get Up, Stand Up public speaking and presentation workshop, covering many useful tips and tricks that we can bring into play when doing a bit of self or group promotion.

She will cover all the essential elements of effective public speaking during the morning including:-

  • P&P (preparation and performance)
  • why powerful public speaking matters
  • coping with nerves, terror and stage fright
  • positive posture and body language
  • voice projection and intonation
  • adding the WOW factor
  • platforms, stages and podiums
  • notes and scripts
  • PowerPoint – an unnecessary evil?
  • beginning, middle and end
  • Q&A

The workshop will include interactive elements so that everyone can join in one way or another. Mairi always aims to deliver some good learning, along with plenty of laughs, and she will also bring some props on the day for a bit of fun.
