SUMMARY:Autumn Workshop 2026 and 35th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:ITI Scottish Network invites you to its autumn workshop and spe
cial 35th anniversary celebrations\n\nBeyond the Science: Communicating Vo
lcanic Hazards Across the World\n\nwith ERIC BREARD\n\nTo be held at\n\nTh
 e Quaker Meeting House\, Edinburgh\n\non Saturday\, 10 October 2026\n\n\n\
 nProgramme\n\n9:30 Registration/foregather (tea/coffee available)\n\n10:00
Workshop (part 1)\n\n11:15 Refreshment break\n\n11:45 Workhop (part 2)\n\
 n1:00 ScotNet memories\n\n1:15 Lunch\n\n14:30 Ceilidh\n\n17:30 End of cele
brations\n\nVenue and Lunch\n\nThe workshop\, lunch and ceilidh will all t
ake place at the Quaker Meeting House\, 7 Victoria Terrace\, above Victori
a St\, Edinburgh EH1 2JL. The venue is about 10 mins walk from Waverly Sta
tion.\n\nTopic\n\nAround 800 million people live in areas that could be di
rectly affected by volcanic hazards. As populations grow around active vol
canoes\, the challenge is not only to understand eruptions\, but to make r
isk clear across languages\, cultures\, and communities.\n\nVolcanoes have
shaped human history across the world: burying cities\, feeding soils\, f
orcing migrations\, creating myths\, and redefining how societies live wit
h danger. This workshop will explore how language influences the way volca
nic hazards are understood\, translated\, and acted upon.\n\n\nDrawing on
 experience from Chile\, New Zealand\, the USA\, France\, Guatemala\, and E
cuador\, the session will discuss how volcanic hazards and monitoring tech
niques can be explained to broad audiences. It will also introduce the dev
elopment of a new educational hazard poster\, designed for scientists\, ha
zard practitioners\, students\, and the public\, with the long-term aim of
adapting it into many languages and contexts.\n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\nDr Eric C
. P. Breard is a volcanologist at the School of GeoSciences\, University o
f Edinburgh. He studies explosive volcanic eruptions and the dangerous flo
ws they can produce\, such as pyroclastic flows\, volcanic plumes\, and la
ndslides. His research begins with what can be observed in the field\, the
n translates those observations into laboratory experiments\, measurements
\, and computer models that help explain how volcanic processes work.\n\n\
n\nHe uses supercomputers to simulate eruptions\, track how volcanic flows
move across landscapes\, and understand how they interact with air\, wate
r\, and terrain. His work helps translate complex data into clearer volcan
 ic-hazard communication\, supporting scientists\, observatories\, communit
ies\, and the wider public in understanding and acting on volcanic risk.\n
\n\n\n\nCost\n\nWorkshop only:\n\n\n\n\nITI Scottish Network members: free
