SUMMARY:Autumn Workshop 2019
DESCRIPTION:ITI Scottish Network invites you to its autumn workshop:\n\nHON
ING OUR TECHNICAL WRITING SKILLS\nWITH KAREN MCMILLAN TKACZYK\nProgramme\n
 9:30   Registration/foregather (tea/coffee available)\n10:00 Workshop (p
art 1)\n11:30 Refreshment break\n12:00 Workshop (part 2)\n1:30   End of
 workshop\n2:00   Lunch at Ciao Roma\nWorkshop's topic\nTechnical transla
tors with excellent technical writing skills stand out from the crowd\, in
the quality of their translations and in their income potential. But too
few technical translators consider the style of the texts they produce.\n\
nKaren will briefly start by reviewing the techniques for producing optima
l texts that convey information effectively\, precisely\, clearly\, and co
ncisely – the basic principles of good technical writing – and then mo
ve on to more advanced techniques.\n\nKaren works into English\, but the m
aterials are structured so that people working into any language will have
to reflect on which of the ideas apply for their target language: first t
heoretically and then practically after the coffee break. Translators who
work into English but not typically on technical texts will also be consid
ered: they will be encouraged to reflect on which principles apply for all
English texts and which they need to jettison for their work.\n\nThe enti
re event will be interactive. The second portion will be hands-on and incl
ude sample texts that highlight problem areas to edit in small groups acco
rding to target language (groups will be formed on the day). Attendees sho
uld leave knowing how to apply the theory and practical tips presented\, s
tarting on Monday morning!\nOur speaker\nKaren McMillan Tkaczyk first trai
ned as a chemist\, then after having children changed course and became a
freelance technical translator and editor. She has been translating\, edit
ing and proofreading since 2006.\n\nKaren has more than a decade of in-per
son training and public speaking under her belt. She gives much of her tra
ining in two areas: scientific subject-matter expertise for translators\,
and great scientific and technical writing and editing.\n\nKaren is origin
ally from the UK and has lived in the US since 1999. Karen is a Fellow of
ITI and a tutor on its Setting up as Freelance Translator course\; she is
heavily involved in the American Translators Association and currently ser
ves as its Secretary. She tweets as @ChemXlator.\n\nVenue &amp\; Lunch\nTh
e event will take place at the City of Edinburgh Methodist Church\, 25 Nic
olson Square\, Edinburgh\, EH8 9BX. The venue is 15 mins walk from Waverle
y Station.\n\nFor lunch we will head to the nearby restaurant Ciao Roma (6
 4 South Bridge\, Edinburgh\, EH1 1LS) for some lovely Italian food. Please
