They realised they couldn’t afford to have each and every one of their texts professio nally revised by another translator\, so they decided that\, instead of fo cusing on improving individual translations\, they would focus on how to b ecome better translators all round.\n\nThere was only one small obstacle. Victoria lives in Buenos Aires\, Simon’s home is in Barcelona and Tim is based in Cádiz\, so whatever they did had to work remotely. The result w as a collaborative professional development group\, which goes by the name of ‘Revision Club’. They started simply by taking turns giving each o ther feedback on their work\, sending back heavily annotated Word document s via email. But the arrangement quickly flourished and they now do a mont hly translation slam (by Skype)\, they communicate regularly by email and WhatsApp\, they share the occasional assignment\, and they have presented their ideas at workshops and conferences.\nSpeakers\n\n\nTim Gutteridge wo rks from Spanish and Italian into English. He specialises in academic and literary translation\, with a particular interest in theatre. In addition to being a Qualified Member of the ITI\, he is a member of Mediterranean E ditors and Translators and of ASETRAD (the Spanish Association of Translat ors\, Editors and Interpreters). He blogs and writes on various aspects of translation and has co-presented workshops on collaborative professional development in Barcelona and Girona.\nBorn and brought up in Scotland\, Ti m lives in Cádiz\, Andalusia\, with his wife and their two children but m aintains strong personal and professional ties with his home country.\n\nS imon Berrill is a British translator working from Spanish\, Catalan and Fr ench into English and specialising in cultural tourism. A member of the IT I\, the Chartered Institute of Linguists\, the Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters of Catalonia and Mediterranean Editors and T ranslators\, he has presented talks and workshops at the MET annual confer ence on several occasions. He also writes a regular blog.\nSimon is a form er journalist and lives near Barcelona with his wife and son. He loves tra velling\, meeting new people\, especially translators\, and discovering ne w wines. He has no direct connection with Scotland\, but depending on how Brexit goes\, he might be seeking to develop one in the near future.\nWork shop\nThe ScotNet summer workshop\, presented by Simon and Tim\, is design ed to give participants a feel for how Revision Club works\, and an insigh t into the many benefits it can offer\, which range from clearing up those little niggly-naggly doubts about false friends and punctuation all the w ay up to life coaching and superpowered professional networking. They have designed their workshop with multilingual groups in mind.\nSession 1: Int roduction\nThis session consists of a short presentation of how Revision C lub works\, followed by a discussion of what collaborative professional de velopment involves\, the key elements\, and the potential benefits of such an arrangement.\nSession 2: Editing and feedback activity\nFor this sessi on\, participants will need to bring an example of one of their own transl ations\, along with the corresponding source text\, which will then provid e the basis for working in pairs or small groups. For this activity\, ther e will need to be at least one other participant working into the same TAR GET language.\nSession 3: Comparative translation and discussion activity\ nParticipants will need to complete a short translation\, which will then be used for working in pairs or small groups. For this activity\, particip ants will be grouped according to either SOURCE or TARGET language dependi ng on numbers.\nSession 4: Translation slam and setting up a Revision Club \nThis session has two elements. During the first part\, the presenters wi ll do a translation slam using the same text as the one participants trans lated and discussed in session 3. The slam is designed to give participant s a feel for how they conduct their monthly Skype slam and will be framed as a wider discussion between the presenters and all of the workshop parti cipants. The final part of session 4 will provide an opportunity to discus s practical aspects of establishing\, organising and maintaining a collabo rative development partnership.\nPreparation for the workshop\nParticipant s will be asked to complete two short preparation tasks: translate a short text and bring along a translation sample for revision on the day. We wil l provide more information on this nearer the time.\nWorkshop groups/pairs will be organised according to language combinations. The Woodside Hotel\, dating back to 1873\, is nestled in the heart of the beautiful Fife villag e of Aberdour. It provides both our workshop venue and our dinner and ceil idh space\, all under one roof. A special feature of the dining room is th e stained glass ceiling of the steam liner RMS Orontes.\n\n[caption id="at tachment_856" align="aligncenter" width="541"] Woodside Hotel[/caption]\n\ nOur workshop venue is located on the main A921 near the east end of the t own centre. It is a 4 minute walk from the station.\nParking: for resident s behind the hotel. Large car park (free) at the station.\nAberdour\nAberd our is a historic village on the Fife coast with beaches\, a harbour and a ruined castle.\n\n\n\n\n\nAberdour Castle is possibly Scotland’s\noldes t standing castle. It was built in the\n1100s and went on to serve generat ions\nof three noble families - including a\nRegent of Scotland.\n\n\n\n\n The clock tower at the centre of the village\nwith the train station to on e side and the\nroad to the castle on the other.\n\n\nTransport and direct ions\nBy road from Edinburgh and the south: After crossing the Forth\, fol low the M90 to junction 1C and take the A921 which bypasses Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay. After passing the sign at the start of Aberdour\, continu e for about 400 m and the Woodside Hotel is on the left-hand side. Parking for hotel residents is behind the hotel. For those coming only for the da y\, there is plentiful parking at Aberdour station.\nPublic Transport\nTra in from Edinburgh\nThe Aberdour train from Edinburgh is the service to Gle nrothes with Thornton (for train times see here). It runs every 30 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays (hourly in the evening) and hourly on Sundays. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes.\n\nBus from Edinburgh\nTaking the bus involves changing somewhere like Inverkeithing. The journey theref ore takes around 1 hour 30. The Stagecoach Edinburgh to St Andrews bus (X5 8 and X60) leaves Edinburgh St Andrews Square bus station once or twice pe r hour and takes approx. 40 minutes to reach Inverkeithing. The Dunfermlin e to Leven bus (no. 7) links Inverkeithing and Aberdour with a half-hourly service (journey time 20 minutes).\nAccomodation\nOur fantastic organizer s elaborated a list of available accommodation which was circulated with t he call notice.
